Starting a business is a big step, but what if your spouse isn’t as excited as you are? Many entrepreneurs struggle with gaining support from their partners, especially when it comes to finances, risk, and work-life balance.
In this post, I’m breaking down a candid conversation with my husband, Ron, where we discussed the challenges and breakthroughs we’ve had navigating marriage and business. If you’re looking for ways to bring your partner along on your entrepreneurial journey—without forcing or convincing them—this is for you!
According to Ron, the keys to a healthy partnership while running a business are:
1️⃣ Communication – Be open about fears, finances, and expectations.
2️⃣ Compromise – You may not always agree, but find common ground.
3️⃣ Consistency – Keep the conversations going as your business grows.
Ron was skeptical when I first told him I wanted to invest in a business coach for $4,000. Like many spouses, he thought I could figure it out on my own. However, once he saw that I made back my investment (and then some), his mindset started shifting. If your partner has concerns about business spending, be patient and show results over time.
One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is keeping their business goals vague when talking to their spouse. Your partner shouldn’t have to play detective to understand what you’re doing. Be upfront about your vision, revenue plans, and what support you need from them.
Whether your partner is hesitant or fully supportive, communication is key. Encourage honest conversations, be open to their concerns, and remember—you don’t need to convince them, just keep them informed.
