From “Open for Business” to Booked and Busy: How to Land Your First Virtual Assistant Client (Even if You’re Brand New)

So you’ve started your virtual assistant business—cue confetti 🎉—but now you’re sitting there like, “Uhhh… how do I actually get someone to hire me?”
Been there, bestie. And let me just tell you, landing that first client? It hits different. It’s the moment when your little dream starts turning into something real. But before you go spiraling trying to build a portfolio, finish your website, or create the world’s fanciest Canva resume—pause.
Because what you really need to land your first VA client is a little access, a lot of clarity, and a few key moves that get you from “open for biz” to booked and busy. Let’s break it down:
Step 1: Access Over Algorithms
When I first started out, I thought the only way to get clients was through Instagram. I was posting like crazy, copying what I saw other girlies do, and still—crickets. But you know what actually worked? My coach.
Yep, my very first clients came through a matchmaking program she had. She connected me with business owners who already trusted her, and by extension, they trusted me. Those clients? Stayed with me until the very end of my VA journey. One even followed me into my podcast management era and then my agency. That’s the power of access and referrals.
Don’t have a coach yet? That’s okay. You do have a network. And it’s time to use it.
Step 2: Tell People What You Do (Without Being Cringey)
Here’s your new assignment: Email every single person in your personal network. I’m talking friends, old coworkers, cousins, that auntie who’s always cheering you on. But don’t sell to them—inform them.
Say something like:
“Hey [Name], I just launched my virtual assistant business! I offer [services] and would love if you’d keep me in mind or pass my info along to anyone who might need support. Thanks so much for cheering me on!”
Short. Sweet. Not salesy. Just letting folks know the doors of your business are open. People want to support you—but they can’t if they don’t know what you do. This one email alone has helped so many of my coaching clients book their first gig.
Step 3: Nail the Discovery Call
You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to fake experience. You just need to connect.
A discovery call is just a chill convo to see if you and your potential client vibe. Show up prepared (know what they do), show your personality (say hey to the dog that walks in the background), and focus on how you can actually help them.
Highlight your strengths, but keep it real. I used to say, “I’m still learning Dubsado, but I’m super adaptable and great at figuring things out.” And guess what? That honesty paired with confidence got me hired over and over.
Bonus tip: Let them talk. Like, a lot. The more they share, the more you understand how you can help—and the more they feel seen. It’s a win-win.
Step 4: Follow Up Like a Boss (But a Chill One)
Please don’t ghost your leads. Ever.
After your discovery call, send a quick personalized video recap. I know, video feels scary. But it doesn’t need to be fancy. Just pop on your phone and say:
- What you loved about the convo
- How you can help
- That you’ll follow up again in a few days (so they’re not surprised)
Then follow up two more times over the next week or two. Keep it warm, casual, and respectful of their space. If they still don’t respond? Cool—add them to your “staying warm” list for quarterly updates or helpful tips (and yes, they do come back later).
Step 5: They Said Yes—Now What?!

Treat yourself—get a coffee, go for a walk, play your victory song. Then it’s go time. Here’s what you want to send to your new client right away:
- Contract & Invoice – Always bill ahead of the month, not after. Protect your energy and your coin.
- Client Questionnaire – So you know exactly what they need help with.
- Task + Time Tracker – Pick a tool that works for you (ClickUp, Notion, Asana, etc.).
- Kickoff Call Link – A 30-45 min chat to set expectations, ask questions, and start strong.
And don’t forget: Check in during the first couple weeks! Even a 15-min touch base can make your client feel supported (and keep you both on track).
